Useful tips for choosing a bed for your bedroom
A bed, like any other furniture in the house, is very individual and must match the height of those who will use it. Every person spends a third of his life sleeping, so our well-being and productivity depend on what we sleep on.
Basic bed models
The bed in the bedroom is classified according to the number of places to sleep:
- single – has a length of 1.9-2.1 m, a width of 0.8-1.2 m, intended for one person;
- one-and-a-half – slightly larger than a single model, length is 1.9-2.2 m, width – 1.2-1.6 m;
- double – has a length of 2-2.2 m, and a width of 1.6-2.3 m, suitable for a comfortable rest and night sleep for two people.
Before buying a bed, it is important to determine the parameters of the product. When installed, there should be at least 70 cm of space between the bed and other pieces of furniture. This distance is enough to place a bedside table and move freely around the room.
Tips for choosing bed size and shape
When choosing the size and shape of your bed, there are a few tips to consider:
- The height of the product is selected taking into account individual characteristics. While models with any height are suitable for young people, older people should choose high models to make it easier to stand up. Also, the height of the bed should be higher than 30-40 cm from the floor, otherwise there is a risk of drafts.
- The length of the product is calculated to be 10 cm greater than the height of a sleeping person. When buying a double bed for a couple, the length is selected according to the height of the one who is taller.
- The width of the bed is selected according to the elbows: the hands should not touch the partner, and the distance of the outstretched elbows to the edge should be at least 10 cm.
The shape of the bed is rectangular, round, oval and arched. Rectangular models look impressive in standard rooms. Other forms of beds will help emphasize the sophistication of the interior but will cause trouble when choosing bedding and a mattress.
How to choose a bed frame
The basis of any bed is its frame, and the durability of the product directly depends on the quality of its assembly. The frame consists of the following main elements: support (with or without legs), side panels, backrest and footboard (optional).
The bed design is available in two versions:
- two support backs with two panels on the side;
- four side panels with one or two hinged backrests.
Models with backrests wear out less often; beds have supporting legs, which look light and elegant in the bedroom interior. A long blanket or blanket will help hide the legs of the furniture.
Lift-up Storage Bed
The bed can be used not only for sleeping and relaxing, but also for storing objects and belongings.
A lift-up storage bed is a spacious item, under which you can place several sliding drawers.
Lift-up storage beds use a heavy-duty frame with a special mechanism that consists of hinges or hydraulic shock absorbers for a smooth lift.
Folding bed or transforming bed
Models of the transformer variety are relevant for apartments with a small area. During the day, the structure is fixed to the wall and does not interfere with free movement, and at night, thanks to the tilting mechanism, it is transformed into a spacious place to sleep. Such models are used as a prop cabinet or a small sofa.
Bed style
The material and design of the product must be ergonomic and match the style of the room:
- Low beds of the platform and podium varieties are suitable for high-tech, Japanese and minimalist styles.
- Products with leather headboards will decorate classic, ethnic, minimalist, and modern interiors.
- A bed with a bamboo base and a rattan headboard will complement the ethnic, tropical, and environmental styles.
- A product with a forged back will be an excellent addition to the interior in Provence, retro and country styles.
Models with a carved wooden back and decorative, gilded overlays are suitable for interiors decorated in classic, baroque and rococo styles.
Mattress, blankets and pillows
Relaxation comfort depends on the right mattress. An orthopedic mattress is included with the bed models, and sometimes the mattress has to be selected separately. It is recommended to choose a firm or medium-firm mattress unless it is prohibited for health reasons.
The weight of the mattress is selected to be more than 10-20 kg of the weight of the person who will sleep on it. When selecting the height, it is necessary to take into account that the greater the weight, the higher the mattress. The dimensions of the product must exactly match the dimensions of the bed, a maximum discrepancy of 1 cm is allowed.
Properly selected blankets and pillows contribute to a comfortable sleep. When purchasing a blanket, the height and weight of the person, as well as the dimensions of the bed, are taken into account. Lightweight options are suitable for the warm season, and cold blankets for the cold season.
It is also important to choose the right pillow. It is recommended to use pillows made from natural materials. To save space on the bed, it is preferable to buy rectangular pillows measuring 50 by 70 cm.
